SANCTUARY CITIES: Legal “Borders” that are in flux

On April 25, 2017 Federal District Court Judge enjoined the Trump administration from withholding funding from “sanctuary cities” during the pendency of a lawsuit in California.  This action by the Ninth Circuit prevents federal “coercion” through withholding funding to the sanctuary cities such as Amherst, Cambridge and Somerville in Massachusetts.  The judge stated, “Federal funding that bears no meaningful relationship to immigration enforcement cannot be threatened merely because a jurisdiction chooses an immigration enforcement strategy of which the president disapproves.”
